So you’ve been networking for some time now and want to level up. Congrats, you’re reading this blog so you’re already on your way and doing a great job!
We’ve been networking for some time now and have put our top 4 tips to get you even more success from your networking.
Of course you can use your NLYMI diary and planner to track your ongoing success as you use these tips in practical scenarios.
Tip 1. Do Your Research
OK, so this one is technically before any event but if you’re booked and planned to go to a networking event then hopefully you will have set yourself some time to research the event and make a note of the type of attendees that will be attending.
If you haven’t set some time aside to research before the next event you are attending. Do this now!
Add this to your diary ‘Research Upcoming Networking Event’ for 30 minutes.
During this time, take a look at the social links connected to the networking event. See if you can see anyone else who is going and if they are someone that you would like to connect with at the event then… you guessed it.
Do your research on them. Check out their social media profiles, the company they work for – make sure you know something about them or their company that you can start talking about at the event. Being interested in them makes all the difference when opening up a conversation and forming lasting relationships.
Another way to do your research is to ask the event organiser for an attendee list. Sometimes these will be given freely, others are handed out after the event so it just depends on the event and the organiser and their discretion.
But, as the old saying goes – if you don’t ask, you don’t get. So make sure you ask!
Tip 2. Approach with opportunity
Go into networking with an open mind and an open heart. Yes, an open heart.
Networking isn’t about what you can get, it’s about giving. Approach every opportunity with an opportunity to help others. Connect with people based on your research, it doesn’t always have to start with the business opportunity, the more you get to know someone and what’s important to them, the better foundation for a long lasting relationship.
So when you approach people, sometimes leading with their personal interests is best. Find out how you can help people, ask what they are looking for and remember that networking isnt just take, its better when you can offer new connections something.
What goes around comes around.
Tip 3. Follow up
This is possibly the number one tip but without the first two you wouldn’t have anyone to follow up with. So this is an essential step and one people often miss. Don’t be that person to miss the follow up opportunity.
It’s best to follow up as soon as possible. Ideally, if you’ve swapped business cards – within 24 hours of the event.
Follow up with a friendly email or connection relating to the event or circumstances in which you met. It helps refresh their memory and yours.
It’s important at this point not to lead with your business offering but ideally here is where you keep the conversation going. Continue what you started talking about at the event or if there’s anything else you can add from your initial conversation – now’s the time to share your knowledge and offer your help again.
If you have a lead magnet or anything that helps your new connection in relation to what you offer, then great – ask them if they would like it.
Then, keep following up.
Tip 4. Request
If you don’t ask, you don’t get.
Once you’ve had some initial back and forth. In your follow ups you might have scheduled a call or meeting. But if you haven’t done so yet, now is the time.
You’ve met your new connection, followed up and showed your value. Next it’s time to request – request that meeting, their interest in your product or service or if that’s not why you initiated the connection – request those referrals!
Referrals are some of the best ways to grow your business. Essentially, its word of mouth and nothing comes better than a recommendation from a friend. So make sure you offer to reciprocate with your new friend.
